Is anyone here available to help out an old PARIS user to convert projects? I'm no longer PARIS-capable, but found some old projects. I'd love to just get raw tracks out of these (finalizing the edits, as it were).
I also have an OnStream 50GB drive but no computer to drive it. It's a 50-pin SCSI interface. And I (of course) have a few tapes I'd like converted back to hard drive.
If you can do this, what would you charge? Email is stefan stefanpodell com
Thanks!

Hi All,
I just sent an email to Slate Audio letting them know I would not be buying their product because of the iLok and what has happened with PACE, PARIS 3.0, and 64 bit Windows.
If there is any good to come out of the PACE/PARIS debacle, it is as a prime example of why digital locks should be illegal.
Just an FYI.

Hi everyone,
I'm currently doing a clean install of Windows 7 after removing the pace driver didn't clear up the problems it caused.
1) IE crashed whenever the flash plug in was enabled
2) The flash installer crashed
3) the Visual C++ new project wizard would crash.
I'm sure that there are a lot more problems, but those are the ones I came up against. I spent the better part of the weekend trying to fix it and gave up last night.
Beware!

Hello PARIS users,
I was around along time ago on Chuck's old forums but with so much live playing the studio work has received very little attention. That's reversing for me now with the live going away and some recorded track opportunities so it's time to revive the PARIS system.
I figured with all the new changes that my Windows 98 with an Athlon 1.3 Ghz could probably use an update. If anyone has any thoughts or gotchas on my proposed ideas I'd appreciate it.
First the hardware. I'm looking at a MB with a PCI-E slot for the graphics and a PCI card slot. I have a Magma 13 slot that I will hang off of this and put the EDS and UAD cards in. Plan to use the PCI Magma host card and not switch that to a PCI-E host card. Machine could be an i5 Core machine; ~3.0 Ghz. I can go up to a i7 but I don't see the value. LGA-1155 for those caring about such detail. 2 gigs of RAM (if I can find two 1 gig sticks for sale....); might have to settle for 4. Two SDD drives; one for tracking and one for the OS. I figure if the constant tracking on the one drive shortens it's life at least the OS is still OK. Any archiving could be copied to an external drive. Video would be a quad nVidia; possibly the PNY card with the 4 MiniDisplay Port video outputs. I believe we were all in favor of the Matrox and ColorGraphic cards back in the day but nVidia seems to be about the only game in town now for a quad display (I only need 3). PARIS only; nothing else running on this besides PARIS and plug-ins.
Second the OS. With the progress on the drivers obviously something besides Windows 98 can now be used. XP or 7 would suffice but now we have the whole 64 vs 32 bit options. From what I'm reading here with no other programs running on the PARIS system I'm thinking staying at 32 bit would be best since it would guarantee fewer plugin hiccups. The 64 bit buys RAM use (not needed) and other benefits that do not seem to apply. Anything extra with sample libraries or big MIDI sequencing would probably be driven from another machine if I ever had a need for that which I don't foresee. Sounds like people have been adding RME 9652 cards and using Reaper into PARIS all on one system even on lesser hardware if for some reason I wanted to pursue that.
So, anything else I should be aware of having been out of the loop for so long?
Thanks much.
-Matt-

Hi Gang!! Happy New year!!
Question: I'm currently working on an HP XW8600(8core xeon) DAW running Pro Tools HD (Native) and Nuendo5.
I have a client that I produced back in 2002, and we used Paris 3.0.
-Can I use the above Daw(HP XW8600).?
-The DAW is running Win7 Pro 64bit, with 4 open PCi-e slots and 1 PCI -33 open..
If this system can't, can someone point into the right direction for a new Paris PC to move my cards?
Thanks a Bunch..

I have a 2 eds 1000 setup and I'm looking for a way to record directly onto Mix B. When I try to connect Mixer B it says you can't cross the eds 1000 boundry.
How can I record more that 16 tracks live?

Nebula is a fantastic plug in that emulates gear like nothing else, particularly EQs and Reverbs AND it work in Paris (XP 32 bit at least).
Long time Paris user (not sure of current usage) accomplished Producer and former Forum participant Gene Lennon has created a new Nebula library.

I noticed that if record something at a reasonably hot level, (approaching 0db).. that if I add some gain with an eq or comp (lets say half the range of gain on an eq knob) on a channel fader it will clip.. (a thrashy digital type sound) even though I still have room on the mix bus.
If I bring the channel fader down, it doesn't make a difference, but if I change the gain of the clip i can add some gain with eq or compression..
does this sound right or am I doing something wrong?
I watched the Brian Tankersley video and he said that you can add quite a bit of gain at the eds inputs before clipping so it made me wonder.
(im using version 2.2 right now)

Hi,
I currently running my Paris on a Win Pro XP 32 bit OS and it has been stable. I have heard that Paris multi-core drivers will also run on win 7 32 bit.
Is there an improvement by going from Win XP 32 bit to Win 7 32 bit?

Hello. I suppose this is directed to Mike.
I've been rethinking my master buss processing for mixing lately - in Paris. I know that when I pull up the patchbay, there are insert points for the L/R submixers. I'm wondering if there's a way to add this insert point on the software submixer for Paris plugins. ?
What I really would like is... say 4 or 5 busses with plugin inserts in front of the master buss insert. But just having an insert point on the submix masters would sort of lead me that direction.
Any thoughts?
TIA,
- Carl

Sadly, it seems there hasn't been much activity here from Doug Wellington in a year or so; I'm guessing he's got too much going on to continue his PARIS hardware hacking for the moment.
But I was thinking about the motorized faders he had been working on. It seems to me that if we've successfully reverse-engineered the RS-422/faux MIDI protocols the C16 uses, why couldn't we wrap them in software and create a virtual C16 interface for a touchscreen like an iPad or Android tablet? Imagine having all your faders, buttons, etc. available virtually... you could zoom, there would be no need for motorization - the faders would always reflect the current state of the mix. (And imagine all that room you'd save on your mixing desk...!)
There are so many possibilities... Imagine you have 12 tracks of drums, but you only have 2 EDS cards, so you have four non-drum tracks on your second submix. You could assign the faders from those tracks to a view with submix 1 and control them without ever having to worry about the drums. (I'm sure you can come up with better examples, but that's all I've got at 4:30am.)
Has anyone thought about/done this? I don't know what the state of documentation for the C16 protocol is, nor am I good enough to code an app of my own, but I'd be more than willing to pay for a solid app someone developed to do it.

After three days of struggling to get my old G4 running w/ PARIS again I should just be grateful to be back to work, right? Except that for some reason I've lost all of my EDS effects' presets - both factory and the ones I've created. Anyone know where those guys live? I have PARIS copied to two other volumes in the same computer so one of them must still have my presets if I only knew where to look!

when I record in Paris via the ADAT card the level of the signal is low... I get way more signal if I record analog,
is this normal?

Hello,
Can someone please post instructions(and make it a sticky) of the most complete, detailed, up to date version of a fresh install of Paris, from start to finish. Including software, drivers etc.
I do think others could benefit from this
I just had a hard drive failure and now I cannot seem to get everything running again even after a new install and I assume it is user error...so the more help the better!

Something like a DL380 with 2 Go xeon CPU, 4 Go ram, hardware raid controllers, 4*36 SCSI Go drives, LTO drive for backup, 5 PCI slots ==> it can be found from 0 to 150$. Parts are standard, but get a spare server, and you can host paris for years to come.
- Performance are certainly not top notch but i personaly don't care for fancy plug in (still prefer analog for EQ & comps).
- Reliabity & security will be top notch : RAID 1 or 5 or 10 + real backup policy, and archive a LTO tape from time to time in another place.
...provide you have a separate room, cause those beasts are noisy. a lot more than a mec.
Is there someone who can share his experience with this ?

Also, I'd like to get to know anyone running Paris in Nashville,TN. Especially song writers with a studio or need a guitar player. I realise there are 1000 guitar players out there in Nashburg that need a gig. But, throwing it out there.

Hi guys
We finally got a RADAR V installed into the studio and soon as I ran a mix I did last week I stopped in mid sentence and immediately thought PARIS
That warmth and depth that we have all grown to love and/or take for granted was in my face today and these tracks were recorded on a Mackie mixer to a fire wire card into a lap top...hell even the owner couldn't believe the difference.
I brought those mixes home tonight and ran them in PARIS and the mixes were very similar if not almost identical when I cranked the volume to get my speakers pushing some air.
Bottom line, it'll be a treat to use this system at the studio in conjunction with my PARIS rig at home.

Hi Guys,
I just recorded some audio samples and did 2 mixes. One mix has the phase of the high frequencies (above 250hz) shifted 50 samples back, and the other doesn't. The difference is subtle, but I like it. The low end just sounds thicker, almost in a 70s kind of way. I did this to try to mimic the phase shift introduced by audio transformers. I didn't try to adjust the bass of either track to make the bass level perfectly balanced. I just left it as is to show the difference. I'd cut the bass a bit on the phase shifted one, especially, if I was mixing it.
I'm thinking of putting together a plug-in that can do this on the PARIS mains.
The guitar is recorded with a TLM 103 through a Grace m101.
If you get a chance, let me know what you think!
All the best,
Mike

Hi Folks -
Don't know how many of you have jumped on the Nebula bandwagon, but it's really worth checking out. As a VST Plugin, it works fine in Paris on XP.
The way it works is to buy and install the "Host" Nebula 3, and then within that host, load up various "libraries" of sampled gear. The libraries come both from the Nebula gang in Italy, and a variety of other 3rd party developers.
Particularly with EQs and Verbs, these are outstanding. The catch is that it is very CPU intensive, so you can load up only one parameter at a time. So if you want the Mammoth EQ (Massive P), you would load up four individual instances to get a four band EQ. Not so bad, you can load up 4 in the FFX4 wrapper and save it as a "piece of gear".
The host program is about $100 US, and the 3rd party libraries are dirt cheap. $15 - $50 on average with a few topping out at $100.
Here's the Home page from Italy. On it you can find 3rd party developers.
http://www.acustica-audio.com/
It's a bit of work to get it all authorized (1. create account 2. DL and Install 3.Send serial file back to support 4. Receive and install licence file) but well worth it.
I had a Grammy and Juno nominated producer here back a few months ago, and we listened to the VNXT EMT140 plug, comparing it to the Wendy Carlos Altiverb 6 version, and his jaw dropped. He has his own plate verb, and regularly uses a vintage EMT 140 as well.
FYI

For some reason when i run two instances of this plug-in on two channels, audio becomes heavily distorted - turns into some sort of digital noise.
I have just one EDS card and wonder is this plug-in DSP hungry that it takes all my card's resources?
I'm running Win XP Sp2 with Mike Audet drivers. Installed the "parisxpeffects.exe" and PARIS_StudioControlLibrary.dll afterwards.

So I'm looking for people in the business at all levels as well as people in certain regions of the world like Asia, Africa, Europe etc that would be interested in being interviewed or participate in a round table discussion.
Most interviews and discussions will be recorded via skype and with minimal editing broadcast on the internet as part of this series on the music biz.
Anyone interested please contact me via dnafe@rogers.com or skype me at dnafe23

Hi everyone,
I wanted to pick some members brains here. I have been hearing a lot of good things about these 4 channel snakes that are great for recording live bands on stage remotely. I have a mobile recording system I have just recently set up and I am looking for a good quality snake that is not very heavy. And many people in local stores have recommended this product.
http://www.etslan.com/pdfdocs/Audio/PA200_Series_InstaSnake. pdf
The good news is this company is based in the USA and its a USA made product. Not to discredit overseas products, but it's nice to support USA companies.
What do you all think of it?
Regards,
Johnny

If no one else has ever encountered this I just did for the first time in 10 years doing some new patchbay routing setups....
If you have spdif coming in and connected to a pair of mixer inputs and actually have no spdif connected I keep getting the PARIS must now close box on project close. I have spdif coming in as a stereo pair and just set my patchbay up so each of the four cards has the spdif from the MEC (have one for each card) patched to 15/16 on the cards mixer. Found out that if I leave those patches set up but have no actual spdif cable connected I get this every time I go to close a project. So....seems like you can only have patches connected in the patch bay where the spdif cable is actually connected. Just an FYI that I have not seen before if anyone else might ever come across this.

Greetings to all PARIS-ites,
Has anyone had success using PARIS Hardware with SONAR?
If so, where is the correct file folder location to place the PARIS ASIO driver?
Thanks in advance!

Hi
I opened up Paris today to do some recording and noticed that my reverbs, both room and plate are all missing, except for the default one. Don't know what I did, but anyone know how I can get them back? The Chorus and other ones all have multiple effects to choose from but not the verbs.
Thanks Lou
